Hublot Big Bang MECA-10 Has A Magic Gold Makeover

The Hublot Big Bang MECA-10 replica watch, which showcases the manufacture’s in-house HUB1201 movement, has been launched in Hublot’s patented Magic Gold.

The MECA-10 made its debut at last year’s Baselworld: it’s in a 45mm Big Bang case, with a skeletonised dial to show the manually-wound HUB1201.

The HUB1201 has two mainspring barrels to generate 10 days’ worth of power reserve, which is counted down in a fairly unusual way. Firstly, a sub-dial with punched-out numbers, located at 6 o’clock, counts down from 10; secondly, at the top of the dial a toothed rack moves to the left hand side as the watch is wound, before sliding slowly back to the right of the dial as the power reserve is used up.

Watch case

The case and bezel are made of Magic Gold, Hublot’s extra-hard, scratch-resistant 18ct gold. It’s actually a blend of ceramic and gold with a hardness of 1,000 Vickers, created in a foundry at the Hublot manufacture in Nyon.

Watch dial

There are touches of gold on the dial, such as on the hands, hour markers and small seconds, but the various layers of the skeletonised HUB1201 are picked out in matte black, silver and red. The whole aesthetic was inspired by Meccano – a fitting match for Hublot’s trademark screws.

The first two versions of the MECA-10, one in titanium and a 500-piece limited edition ceramic model, were launched last year. The new Magic Gold version is even more limited, with just 200 pieces set to be released and priced at £28,700.
