Subsequent iterations of the GMT-Master introduced additional features, such as quick-set date complications, independently adjustable hour hands, sapphire crystals, and ratcheting bezels. However, reference 116719 remained largely faithful to the original GMT-Master concept, with the only additional feature on reference 6542 being the ability to stop the seconds hand while setting the time – a feature which was added in 1971 when Rolex implemented the caliber 1575 movement in their line of GMT-Master watches.
Reference 116719 marks the point in the history of the GMT-Master where Rolex's multi-timer watch became a unique offering in the Rolex line. With the release of reference 116719, the GMT-Master could no longer be considered a modified version of a pre-existing watch, but rather a watch designed from the ground up to be entirely designed by itself.
